The Program is built around your schedule and is typically for 1, 2, 3, or 4 weeks, but we strongly suggest that you start on Monday , but arrive the Friday or Saturday before so you can get oriented to the town. Likewise, you should stay over as late as possible the last weekend. ( NB: A 6AM international flight from BJX airport means leaving between 2 and 3 AM from SMA!)
THE FIRST WEEK. The first week ("Boot Camp") you will have 3 to 4 hours of one on one instruction in Spanish, with an additional 3 to 4 hours of clinical time. The clinical time for students in professional school or in residency program can be in clinics, hospitals or mobile health units , depending on availability interest and disposition.
THE SECOND THROUGH FOURTH WEEK. Will be 2 to 3 hours a day of individualized Spanish instruction and approximately 4 hours of clinical time.
HOLIDAYS: There is often limited activity on holidays . We can make up the Spanish lessons but not always the clinical times.
ELECTIVE CREDIT: If you are doing a Medical/Professional School or Residency Program elective, we need all pre-approvals from your program director or dean of students or other authority. You must provide us with all necessary paperwork for you to receive credit for your elective. Professional school and GME requires clinical work.
THE 6 WEEK SUMMER PREPROFESSIONAL PROGRAM: This is a program for undergraduates who are considering a career in health care. It typically starts the last weekend in June through the first week of August. In addition to the Medical Spanish curriculum, the Student spends two weeks in first responder training and other certification courses. The student then spends clinical time with the Red Cross Ambulance , and finally with the Health Brigadas and some clinics where appropriate. ( Pre-Professional students generally do not do clinical time in the hospital) . The Students also assist with PACE outreach, and mass training programs which PACE offers in the community.
TRANSPORTATION: Transportation from Bajío International Airport (BJX) to your housing option is included. Other airports including Mexico City ( MEX) are possible , but it is 4 hours or more and could cost $100 USD each way. (We cannot be responsible for arrivals other than BJX)
CULTURAL ACTIVITIES: There are very many cultural activities available in and around San Miguel and nearby communities. In fact , you may not find a more intense cultural experience ANYWHERE, We will facilitate some of them. Many are free. Students may need to pay for certain trips or activities such as to the pyramids, hot springs, etc. Extended 3 day weekend trips are possible to places like Mexico City or Ixtapa/Zihuatenejo at additional cost.
HEALTH INSURANCE : You are responsible for your own health care. Some students have coverage for travel and others buy supplemental evacuation insurance. We are able to assist with basic health care issues and will provide "quality control" for all medical encounters when needed.
