San Miguel de Allende is the home of the MedSpanish / PACE Program.  It is the birthplace of the Mexican Revolution and is the cultural heartland of Mexico. Our training center provides a great base of operations for all of our activities.

In San Miguel (and neighboring Guanajuato City and Dolores Hidalgo) , we provide the highest quality  Medical Spanish, International Health, Cultural Awareness training while doing our medical infrastructure development work.

San Miguel is a colonial gem, perched on a hillside above the Laja River 60 km north of Queretaro, and has a population of about 100,000 people and is popular area for US and Canadian citizens. It was declared a national monument in 1926, and is a charming city of cobblestone streets and colonial-era mansions.

Because of its national monument status, new buildings that would change the character and appearance of San Miguel are strictly regulated. This ensures that San Miguel's charm will endure for years to come and makes this city a wonderful place to come and participate in the best of Mexican culture.

Visitors will also find some of Mexico's best shopping here, and restaurants are plentiful and top-notch, encompassing a variety of international cuisines. It is, in fact, surprising that a city of San Miguel's size has such a wide assortment of fine dining.

There is also very active nightlife with excellent music to be heard of all types. Finally, there are beautiful, therapeutic hot springs nearby and many incredible day trips to be explored, such as Dolores Hidalgo (ceramics), Pozos, Patzcuaro (Indian artisans), and Teotihuacan (pre-Colombian ruins, including the largest pyramid in the world).

San Miguel de Allende

Celebrated as an artists' community with many art galleries and artisan shops, it is home to two famous art schools, Bellas Artes and the Instituto Allende, which attract the world's best artists and craftspeople. The city also has a vibrant cultural scene, hosting numerous festivals each year, including "the running of the bulls" and allegedly the best Easter celebration this side of the Vatican and Jerusalem. There is a world famous chamber music festival in the summer, a fall jazz festival, and a winter classical music festival during the year end holiday season. The state hosts the world famous Cervantino Festival in October (in the city of Guanajuato), and has been graced with the Bolshoi Ballet, among others.

Despite its influx of gringos, San Miguel is a very Mexican community and has not become too Americanized, although the foreign influence can be felt. It is this unique blend of cultures, which makes San Miguel especially suited for our development projects ("cultural leverage").  The nearby towms of Guanajuato City and Dolores Hidalgo have hardly any expats and are integrated into our programs, offering excellent alternatives to San Miguel.

San Miguel can be explored on foot, but taxi rides are also inexpensive ($2 U.S.). More extensive excursions and transportation will cost more, but the first class buses are comfortable and inexpensive, as well.

The airport at Leon, Guanajuato, is a small, full capacity, international airport with direct flights from Dallas (American), Houston (Continental), Chicago (Aero Mexico), and the  Bay Area.  It is also accessible through Mexico City, typically for cheaper airfare but with a bit more connection hassle, (i.e., a 4+ hour bus ride).
