Cultural Literacy

One of the most rewarding aspects of our program is your improved consciousness in cultural literacy. People often have a world view that is fundamentally different than the "biomedical model", and this can impact care. The student will learn  how folk medicine and these beliefs may impact care on many levels.

Learning and living the culture and history in a place such as San Miguel de Allende will bring you closer to your Spanish speaking patients.  As you live and work in San Miguel de Allende and its surrounding areas, you will have the chance to visit museums, meet local residents, and gain appreciation for the history and traditions of a different culture. You will also learn how medicine is practiced in an international setting and how to interact with foreign colleagues. As a member of a respected team of professionals who train medical personnel at all levels to save lives you will be welcome addition to community projects, should you wish to engage in them.
